Hello,

As a new feature it would be great to have a way to kick off a anti-virus scan on the incoming email once the messages have gotten through all the filters.  Some kind of hook that we could run what ever anti-virus program we want (command line version) or even two different ones.  Can something like this be done?

Please take a look at http://www.logsat.com/spamfilter/forums/showmessage.asp?messageID=3570 for more info.

I would actually prefer that SpamFilter does not get any "fatter". It does a lot already.

Use McAfee WebShield or similar SMTP service by an anti virus company. You could even do this on the same server running WebShield on an alternate port and have SpamFilter send email to localhost:alternateport so then WebShield scans for viruses and then relays to your mail server.

New features in SpamFilter should focus on the ever changing SPAM challenge. That's a huge undertaking in itself.  SpamFilter should not be a "kitchen sink" strategy or we'll all be running QUAD XEON processors soon just to move a few email transactions per minute.

Matt,

The concern about SpamFilter getting "fatter" is a legitimate concern, but in this situation, there's nothing to worry about.  Roberto has already said that this capability will be added as a plug-in feature -- an optional feature for SpamFilter, not something that is going to bulk-up the code base, slow down the application or make all SpamFilter users pay for a feature that only a subset of SpamFilter users will want.

Personally, I'm looking forward to the eventual release of this capability.  I am currently using an older (unsatisfactory) mail filtering solution in series behind SpamFilter, but have turned-off everything but the antivirus it provides (because antivirus is just about the only thing that works reliably on this filtering solution).  I am *definitely* going to replace it with something else.  As a customer of LogSat for nearly two years, I have come to trust the reliability of their product and the fairness of their pricing policy, and would give them the "first shot" at selling me a replacement solution.  If I can incorporate antivirus into SpamFilter, I could completely eliminate this old filtering software, and the server it is running on.

And if LogSat comes up with a way to let users like me (and many other users who have asked for antivirus) install it as a plug-in, but not force other users to install and/or pay for something that they don't want or need, then it becomes a win-win situation for every one of us.

Jim
