We're noticing a signifcant increase in spam. We can keep trying to add keywords, but its a never ending, and time consuming battle. It seems the Bayesian filter is missing more and more. Most of our spam is caught by other filters such as filtering by country, and keywords. Is there anything we can do to increase the amount of spam caught? Whats more disturbing is that it seems we are getting more and more false positives as well.

Randall, Spam fighting is a continuous battle. Spammers are using new tricks, and we need to develop new techniques to block them. A couple of new filters are on the way, but we'll need a few weeks to complete them. If in the meantime you can zip us a copy of your SpamFilter.ini files, along with your keyword list, we can try to see if there are any changes we can recommend to improve filtering with your settings. The increase has been dramatic over the last several months. I am blocking over 95% of all incomming e-mail and my users are complaining that they are receiving more spam then ever before. It is very frustrating... One user annoyed me so much with his complaints about spam that I put him on the "do not filter" list, he now appreciates what SpamFilter does for us! :) The real problem is the folks out there that never patch their home computers and the spammers now OWN them, the RDBLS do not pick them up and their messages are really short and almost always links. I dont think there is any better way then what we are already doing.

Where can you get a spam filter? Is there anything that can protect my company's server? The best commercial server-level Bayesian filter is probably Death2Spam. SpamProbe, one of the best open-source Bayesian filters, can also be run on the server. Most commercial server-level spam filters are still rule-based. But there are starting to be some that use Bayesian filtering. The way to find them is probably to search in Google. The question to ask the salesman is, does the filter learn to recognize spam based on the spam and nonspam mail we receive? If it doesn't learn, it isn't Bayesian.
Is there a Bayesian filter for email clients Outlook and Outlook Express? There are now many Bayesian filters available, most of them free. I know of nine so far: http://www.spambully.com - Spam Bully, |
