It seems 'User Authentication' is more set up to work with Freeware OS's (Linux, FreeBSD). Windows users are locked into installing/using Active Directory or configuring LDAP, UNIX PW files containing unneccessary data for a windows environment. In our network all data needed for 'User Authentication' to SFISP quarenteen and access to customization of filters by domain are available to us in text files and MSSQL/MySQL databases. As a added feature to Enterprise DB, can the 'User Authentication' data be stored there and written to text back-up file like the rest of the SF config, or an ODBC connector or text file reader added as an option to the 'User Authentication' configuration settings? Any suggestions of what other windows users have set up other than using LDAP, UNIX PW, Active Directory or the Custom Interfaces would be Greatly Appriciated!! |

pulsar,
Having usernames/passwords unencrypted in a text file is not something we recommend. This is why we also support Unix-style password files. They can be very, very simple, without extra information. Just the userID and the encrypted password. There's many free Win32 utilities that take lists of plain-text usernames/passwords and use "crypt" compatible encryption to create the password files. We do have planned to also be able to read usernames/Pwds from a database table, but that feature is not available yet. |

Good points. I was thinking I had to set up LDAP. It should not be that difficult to make login data available from a database. Everything else is in a database for Enterprise. That would be a great feature for Enterprise. If the login data was in a table we could sync it up with an outside application. Our login data is currently in a MSSQL database and we run Spamfilter with MySql. Sync woud be so easy. Please put that on our want list.

Quoted from Roberto's reply... "There's many free Win32 utilities that take lists of plain-text usernames/passwords and use "crypt" compatible encryption to create the password files." We have found a few programs, but they not very freindly. Anyone have any suggestions or links on what to use? |
