Is there a check within the spam system that checks to make sure that the senders email is valid before accepting it?

There is not one to check if the actual email address itself is valid, but there are others to check if the domain specified in the address is valid (MX record test). There is also one (the SPF filter) that checks to ensure that the IP sending you emails is authorized by the owner of the domain name to send such emails.
