I am having an issue with spamfilter and MSSQL. It seems that I have connections that hang, or that spamfilter stops talking to SQL after a while. I cannot see an issues in the log, but message that have deliver = 1 in the databse will stop being delivered, and we have to restart spamfilter and SQL to get it moving again. This sometimes happens every hour, other times once a day. In looking at SQL we get over 50-100+ connections and it never  seems to drop until spamfilter is restarted. Is there something I can look at to see why spamfilter stops processing the messages that have deliver = 1 in the database? Or find what the error might be?

My configuration...
1 - 2003 Server running SQL 2005 Ent
1 - 2003 Server running spamfilterisp enterprise
Connection String to DB = Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Password=xxxx;Persist Security Info=True;User ID=spamfilterxxxx;Initial Catalog=SPAMDB;Data Source=SERVER5;Connect Timeout=30

Thanks

As a follow up. It does appear the spamfiler does continue to insert quarantine items into the database. It just stops processing the ones to deliver.

Scott,

The quarantine database only contains emails that are received and detected to be spam. Only if the end-users chose to have those emails force-delivered to them, then SpamFilter will mark them in the database for delivery by setting their "Deliver" flag to 1. Within seconds of an email being tagged with a "deliver=1" flag, it will be delivered by SpamFilter. Please note that these emails, once delivered, will not be deleed from the database right away. Instead, they will have the "Delete" flag set to 1. Once an hour SpamFilter will then remove these expired emails from the database.

It is absolutely normal for the database connections to be high. If your SpamFilter server receives 100 emails per minute for example, most likely 90 of them will be spam and will have to be stored in the quarantine database. SpamFilter is multi-threaded, so there will be multiple inserts inot the datbase at any time, and thus the number of connections can (and usually is) high.

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying, but the email will never go out and not be cleared from the database, we have waited for days and it does not process until we restart both SQL and spamfilter. After a restart it works for awhile then just stops, sometime a day later, other time and hour later. No rhyme or reason. And yes, the user is selecting to have them email delivered. And on the SQL server conntections, we see that many never clear. So they run their command, but never release.

We run about 400,000+ emails a day through spamfilter. And our quarantine area hovers around 2,500,000-3,000,000.

I hope this helps clarify the issue.

Scott, can you please zip us one of SpamFilter's activity logfiles for a day this happened? If the zip is over 5MB in size, I'll send you a PM with the login information for our FTP upload site. Please also let us know the to/from email addresses for a couple of the emails that are not being delivered for that day, so we may locate them in the logs.
