Apparantly the service provider Postini last month succeeded in patenting the idea of centralized preprocessing of email on behalf of an ISP or end user based on 38 claims.

The patent system has been out of control and completely out of touch with IT for years and this is just one more reason why the patent system needs to be revamped.

Hopefully this will have no bearing or hinderance on further development of anti-spam products

Postini is a service we (Mags Net) tries over a year ago.  It is perfectly fine for a corporate setting but was WAY to expensive and anoying at our level.  I would be interested in finding out what part was patented.  As an elextronics engeneer for nearly 30 years, I applied for over 20 patents and only managed to get approved on 4.  The process is very tricky.
