Hi,

Would it be possible to add second destination server IP address for the same domain

as a fail-over ?

Thanks

Artur,

Thanks for the request. If the destination SMTP server is unavailable, SpamFilter will queue all emails in a holding queue directory and will reattempt to deliver them at regulare user-defined intervals until the server is available again.

Failover servers are often implemented by using separate servers behind a content switching router, like the Cisco CSS 11000 series, which provides a single virtual IP which is then balanced to the various servers behind it.

While SpamFilter can be configured to specify different destination servers for each domain it handles, it does not support specifying multiple (failover) destination servers for each domain.

We have an increasing need to route mail to companies with failover ISP systems...different IP addresses to the same mail server.

This is a year old topic but has it ever been addressed so we can designate 2 or more mail servers to a single domain?

rbarrow,

We have the following in our allowed (hosted) domains:
mail.customerdomain.com:mail2.customerdomain.com:25

In DNS zone for "customerdomain.com" we have:
@      MX     10     mail.customerdomain.com
mail2  A        66.66.66.70
mail2  A        66.66.66.71

This has the effect of "round-robining" the delivery but NOT fail-over.

Fail-over is normally done using load balancing HARDWARE that actually looks like one IP address from the "outside" and redirects traffic to any number of IP's on the "inside".  The "Inside" does not need to be on the same physical network.

There is no "approved" way that I know of having a mail server deliver to a secondary IP if the primary is down.  DO not confuse this with multiple MX records as this is a "standard" that normal mail servers will use to deliver if a mail server is dead or overloaded.  SpamFilter is "Relaying" mail to a fixed host and queuing if it goes down for delivery when it comes back up.

This doesn't mean it is not possible to do this but I am not sure what it may take to make this kind of change in SpamFilters behavior.

Dan,

That is what we have tried as well and as you point out, it works...in a fashion.

I am sure it would be no small task to add the behavior to the product however, given many of our customers moving to fail-over environments, it is increasingly important.

Thanks!
Roy

Any update on this request?

Is having an (A) record pointing to two IPs the only way still?
