There is an increasing number of spammers who are creating bogus MX records in their domains with values of 127.0.0.1 or similar. These loopback entries are causing problems as some mail servers are suffering from mail loops when sending non-delivery emails to those domains.

We've been asked to see if SpamFilter could help. In response to this, we're developing a new filter that checks the MX record for the sender's domain. If the domain either does not have an MX record, or its value is in the 127.0.0.1-127.0.0.255 range, the email is rejected.

Earlier tests are showing that this new filter, besides solving the loopback problems for the SMTP servers, is also very effective in blocking even more spam.

A pre-release build with this feature, along with an option to limit the number of concurrent connections from a single IP, is available in the registered user are of the website for all licensed users. Please note that this build is not officially released yet, but are making it available to users if they need to solve immediate problems that may be occurring.

Alain,

That filter is to prevent a single external server/user/spammer from performing a Denial of Service to SpamFilter. With it you can place a limit on the maximum number of incoming concurrent (simultaneous) connections from an IP address. This will allow other IPs to connect while disconnecting any others that are attacking SpamFilter.
