Good call Ian, I agree with the RFC's you mentioned.  The 'reject if empty mail from' option will cause you issues with earthnet and others as well.  We found early on we could not block on this basis.

Does anyone know how to fix this?  I have had this error on my Verizon email intermittently for several weeks although my Verizon internet connection works.

We had the problem with verizon ahd have solved it.  The checkbox "reject if empty mail from" had been checked.  We unchecked it and mail started flowing to verizon.

So check the status of this setting.  They send an email with a "blank from" addy to test before allowing email to flow.  I had the same issue with "Internet America".

I am sure glad to see it is not just me--for all the good that does!  It is getting so frustrating having to reboot all the time because I can neither access my email or get on the Internet. The tech had me log onto www.red.com this morning-that certainly did not help.

Just a comment to the above post:

No one is "insisting" on anything. The administrator of a mail server has the right to decide what it will, or will not accept, as long as they are willing to accept the consequences.  My server does, in fact, accept empty Mail Froms but if there is a Mail From, then my decision is that if the Mail From (return path) is not valid then I am not accepting that message just as if you block your caller ID on the phone, I am not taking the call.  Yes, ... there are cases where a DNS admin gets lazy and relies on an "A" record for mail delivery but if you read the RFC it states that if no MX record exists that the mail server *should*, not *must* attempt delivery to an "A" record.  My choice though.
 
Having said that, last week, I ran a script to test all my messages that were blocked for "No MX" and in ALL cases, any existing "A" record was also not a mail server so there was no potential harm done.
 
As an ISP, I do have to accept Empty Froms, and do.  As much as it pains me, I also accept "Postmaster" but only accept "root" from internal servers.  I *always* accept "abuse@" with zero filters and if any one ever spams that address, I will hunt them down with my last breath!

Well, you _must_ accept mail from the null sender, <>.  Ifyou don't, you've got a broken implimentation of SMTP - check outRFC2821 and RFC2822.  Rejecting mail from the null sender meansthat you won't get deliver status notifications and sender verificationcallouts to your server will fail.
Lots of people will refuse to accept your mail.   Alsoinsisting that a domain have an MX record is also wrong.  An Arecord is sufficient.

Yeah - this is really giving me some grief. Good friends who I have emailed for a long time on this account cannot now email me. Verizon tech support do not seem to have any idea this is going on and blame my Outlook for blocking this.

Saying that, I would advise anyone to avoid verizon like the plague - poor service from day 1.
