Originally SpamFilter was only available in standalone mode, the service app was added in later versions. Normally users now run it in service mode, but if anyone wants to run it standalone the option is still there.

SpamFilter can either be run as a NT Service, or like a normal Windows application using the SpamFilter.exe executable. The latter is "standalone mode".

The black/white list text files are read and imported every 60 seconds. SpamFilter opens the file when it reads it and then immediately closes it, without placing any locks on them. As long as other applications don't place locks on the files, they can be placed anywhere.

What does this mean? Also, can several filters share the same .txt files accross a network to avoid multiple edits on the local black/white lists?
