This does not affect SpamFilter UNLESS a buggy Microsoft Windows 2003 SMTP (with or without Exchange) Server tries sending email to your SpamFilter that is using Greylisting:

On a Windows Server 2003-based SMTP gateway server, some messages may remain in the queue folder until the SMTP service is restarted.
 
SYMPTOMS
 
On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based SMTP gateway server, some messages may unexpectedly remain in the queue folder until the SMTP service is restarted. After the SMTP service is restarted, all idle messages in the queue folder are processed correctly. Specifically, the idle messages are delivered, or non-delivery report (NDR) messages are sent to the mail sender. Therefore, the mail sender may receive an NDR message several days or even several weeks after the sender sends a message.

At this time you have to call Microsoft to get the hotfix.

THANK YOU for this!   This is a very important post as it actually is effecting some of our customers who run Exchange and are haveing issues delivering to MANY services ... not just SpamFilter.  The "Hot Fix" does, in fact, cure the issue but why the heck isn't it easily available?  Someone needs to shove a broom stick .... never mind!  You get the point!

You are very welcome Desperado.  Happy to help; especially someone like you who puts so much into helping others on SpamFilter.
 
I'm sure this will be in the next service pack for Win 2003.  Microsoft believes they save support costs by monitoring hotfixes, so they just want to track who's getting it in case they get related support calls.   Dunno if I agree with this, but at least the phone lines are generally not bogged down for hotfix requests.

Thank you Matt, i'm experiencing this problem but i'm not using greylisting at the moment...

Do U think that it would be possible to experience this problem also with only limbo cache activated?

Keeping in mind that this is not a SpamFilter issue, this is a problem with MS SMTP.  So it doesn't matter what you are doing with SpamFilter, although MS SMTP receivers with the flaw could certainly have troubles.
 
It appears that any delayed or 400 series smtp responses from servers could cause issues for MS SMTP Service. Just became obvious to us when others were using greylisting.
 
MS SMTP with and without Exchange is flawed without the hotfix. I recommend you get the hotfix and try it. It's free other than the phone call.
