As SpamFilter "talks" pure SMTP, it does not matter what mail server
software is used to received the "cleaned" emails, it can be absolutely
any mail server running on any operating system. SpamFilter however should be the first application to process your incoming emails as several of the filters work based on the sender's IP address. If another machine on your network processes the emails *before* the mail is forwarded to SpamFilter, then the IP address of the connecting server to SpamFilter will not be the spammer, and many tests will not be as accurate as they could be.
