Subject: confused about "does not have a valid MX DNS record"

Yesterday I upgraded to the latest pre-release version 191. Everything has been going great so far, I have just noticed one thing I can not figure out.

When someone from say person@mail.tandemfs.org  emails someone on my system, SpamFilter kicks it back saying

said: 557 Your
domain
mail.tandemfs.org does not have a valid MX DNS record.
Disconnecting...

which seems correct because when I do an nslookup for the mx record at mail.tandemfs.org it does not have one. However when I reply to this address using my yahoo account it delivers (??) and the person is able to reply to me!

I though I understood dns enough, but I don't understand how it works from yahoo.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
P

You may have some dns issues...I can do a mx lookup and it works fine.

> set type=mx
> tandemfs.org
Server:  UnKnown
Address:  10.0.100.2

Non-authoritative answer:
tandemfs.org    MX preference = 0, mail exchanger = mail.tandemfs.org

mail.tandemfs.org       internet address = 216.12.20.97

Yes, I get the same result when I look up the mx record for tandemfs.org, but the email comes from mailto:user@mail.tandemfs.org" CLASS="ASPForums" TITLE="WARNING: URL created by poster. - user@mail.tandemfs.org , not mailto:user@tandemfs.org" CLASS="ASPForums" TITLE="WARNING: URL created by poster. - user@tandemfs.org

I was under the impression that the domain mail.tandemfs.org needs to have an mx record, not just the domain tandemfs.org...?

Thanks,
P

The only thing I can think of is that because no mx record is present, it looks for an a record. And it sends to that.

Kevin is correct. The domain *should* have a proper DNS MX record. Some forgiving mail servers will attempt to send an email directly to the host name in the domain, mail.tandemfs.org in your case, if no MX record exists. That is why yahoo and other servers will be able to send an email to it.
